Protein Please

When it comes to eating a solid diet, most of us know to incorporate fruits, veggies and lean proteins in addition to plenty of water and whole grain carbohydrates but do you know just how important those proteins are for achieving your health and fitness goals?? Protein is very important for building muscle and toning your physique but it is also very important for your long-term health! Here are 5 reasons (not that you need any more lol) why protein should be included in every meal, especially for my active females out there!

  • Protein helps control hunger and keeps you full longer throughout the day. Research has shown that eating a meal packed with protein triggers a reduction in the hormone Ghrelin (a hunger-inducing hormone) and increases the amount of peptide tyrosine tyrosine, PYY (a satiety-stimulating gut hormone). Your body is slower at digesting proteins, which is one of the reasons why proteins keep you fuller longer compared to carbohydrates. Starting your day with a high-protein breakfast may prevent you from raiding the fridge later in the day.

  • Protein helps create a lean, mean physique. Diets high in amino acids aka the building blocks of protein help build a strong foundation compared to diets high in carbohydrates. You must have the essential amino acids to rebuild your muscles when you break them down with strength training. Studies have shown (especially in women) that a diet high in protein can contribute to a reduction in fat tissue. If you want to build those sculpted muscles, ya gotta feed them with delicious proteins!

  • Eating protein is also important for immune function. Antibodies are specialized proteins that help your body ward off antigens (the pesky invaders that make you sick). These antibodies travel through your blood stream, protecting you from viruses and bacteria. In addition, your red blood cells contain hemoglobin, an iron-containing protein that carries oxygen to exercising muscles via the bloodstream.

  • Protein helps repair and maintain tissues. Every single cell in the body utilizes protein for one process or another. Your skin, hair, nails, muscles and bones all need protein to grow and maintain structure and strength. Proteins help reduce the effects of aging and sarcopenia as well as reduce the risk of bone degeneration.

  • Protein is a fuel source! After long bouts of training (think endurance events lasting longer than 90 minutes), your muscle glycogen stores become depleted and your body must use fuel from another source. Your muscle tissue becomes a sufficient source through a process called gluconeogenesis (when glucose is synthesized from fatty acids and amino acids of lean muscle).

There are many other reasons why protein is VITAL to maintaining health, short- and long-term, as well as helping you achieve your goals…plus protein is delicious!

One of my favorite protein packed snacks that I make for my hubby (I ALWAYS have to make the big daddy size lol) is a pumpkin protein shake. It is delicious for breakfast, a post-workout meal or dessert!

Benefits of Massage Therapy

Happy Monday Y’all! Thanks for being patient with me last week and the lack of posts. It was a crazy, felt like my head was chopped off and I was running in every direction kind of week. I hope you got to enjoy the beautiful weather and maybe even took your fitness outdoors!!

Many of you have probably received a massage once in your life time. Maybe it is a special treat that comes once a year for your birthday, or maybe you try to get one every few months, or just maybe you are able to sneak away and enjoy one every couple weeks. Whatever the case may be, I cannot stress enough the importance of massage therapy for your physical and emotional needs!

Research has shown that individuals who receive massage therapy utilizing moderate pressure, experience a decrease in stress hormones and an increase in white blood cells in addition to stimulating lymph flow that boosts the immune system. Individuals also show higher levels of Oxytocin and Serotonin (a natural antidepressant) and lower levels of inflammation and autoimmune conditions.

Massage therapy has also shown to alleviate body pain in the low back, hips, neck, shoulders (every body part really) and also greatly increase range of motion. Imagine how you feel after sitting at a desk all day, all achy and stiff with tight traps and a sore neck. Now imagine lying down for ½ - 1 hour while your achy muscles are worked on and all the tension is relieved. Is it worth it?? You bet it is!

Did you know that massage has been shown to improve the condition of the body’s largest organ-the skin. It promotes tissue regeneration, helps reduce scar tissue and even helps reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Massage can help reduce post-surgery adhesion's and swelling as well as improve circulation by pumping oxygen and nutrients into the tissues and vital organs.

From a performance stance, massage therapy can greatly enhance an athlete’s performance by promoting recovery from strenuous workouts, increasing joint flexibility and mobility, and alleviate tight and overworked muscles. Massage can also help ease muscle cramping and spasms as well as improve blood flow to working tissues.

Massage therapy is one tool that you will want to add to your arsenal especially if you are training extremely hard and asking a lot from your body. Even if you are a weekend warrior or just getting started on your health and fitness journey, massage can truly benefit each and every one of you!

This weekend was filled with farmers markets, local fruit stands and LOTS of grilling! My new favorite recipe that can be served as a main dish or as a side is a rainbow salad!

YOU Challenge- #9

To those of you who participated with 'Ten Secrets', THANK YOU! I loved reading about you and learning more about what makes you YOU.

Now to the next part of the challenge, Nine Lives... Oops I mean Nine LOVES (nine lives would be a completely separate post on its own!) There are many things I love so keeping it at nine is going to be a challenge but here it goes...

1. My Hubby! I love this man with my whole heart. He has shown me what it feels like to be loved by someone unconditionally. He is patient, kind, unselfish and he puts up with me!

2. My family! There are no words to describe what my family means to me. They have been there through the good, the bad, and the downright ugly. There is not one thing I would not do or give to my family.

3. My kiddos, the bulldogs! They provide me with companionship, love, laughter and a whole lot of frustration. They have the sweetest hearts and think that they are 10-lb lap dogs when in all reality they are 70 (Pudge) and 45 (Stella) pound lap dogs.

4. I love kicking ass! I love a challenge and I love the feeling that comes with conquering something I thought I could not do! Examples include Grad school, figure competitions, leading by example, and truly loving every thing about my life. When you change your outlook, everything falls into place and it is an amazing feeling!

5. Rodeo and horses. In third grade, my dad gave me my first horse and it was love at first sight. I am extremely compassionate about horses and I truly believe that they heal the soul. The way their soft nose nudges you right at the perfect moment, or the way their breath smells after a crunchy carrot. They are amazing creatures and someday I will have a couple in my barn (I can dream right?)

6. Girlfriends! I love my girls that I can count on any time of the day for anything! When you find a true friend, hold them with both of your hands and cherish every moment with them. I feel like my girlfriends were supposed to be my sisters (not sure how my mama would feel about that) but they mean the world to me and every moment spent with them, fills my heart with joy!

7. Exercise (and Muscles!) Whooop! Bet ya wouldn't have guessed this one huh?! I love the way I feel after a good workout. Spending time bettering my health clears my mind and soothes my soul. And yes, I looove muscle! I love everything about it and love helping others achieve their muscle building goals!

8. Traveling- I love to explore new towns, cities, states, and countries. I may not travel as much as I would like but the little amount that I have, has been a true blessing. I love experiencing new cultures and meeting new people. Some of my favorite memories include swimming with sharks in Bora Bora, partying with my mom in San Francisco, hitting the NFR in Vegas with my sister and snowboarding in Montana with my family.

9. Dragonflies. There is not one single word that describes how I feel about dragonflies. These beautiful insects mean more then words can describe to me. Whenever I see one, I know my angel Laurie is watching over me. She was there on my wedding day, she was there on my last important appointment and I know she will always be there, reassuring me through life's many twists and turns. Dragonflies are my hope.

I would love to hear from you and your nine loves!

Fresh Food

Happy Monday and Happy June! Today is the start of the AB challenge and for those of you joining in on the fun; I cannot wait for you to get started!  This is going to be a great kick off to what’s coming next month! J

Over the weekend, I did some deeeeeeep cleaning. When I say deep, I mean nooks and crannies that have probably never been cleaned by my (bless his heart) husband. I tackled the fridge and freezer, removing every single item, checking dates, checking freshness, and reorganizing what went back in and what went in the trash. The “sell by” dates and “expiration dates” are great guides to use when considering tossing an item or just by looking at it. For example, dairy is an easy to look at or smell and decipher if it should be kept or if you happen to see furry friends growing, you know to chuck it!

In a previous post (food prep) I mentioned the length of time I keep my prepared food for but I created this chart to take some of the guess work out of expiration/ freshness dates of the most popular foods.

Some of you may remember being a kid and putting bananas on your peanut butter sandwich. Maybe be you (or your mom) drizzled some honey over the top to make a delicious good sandwich that would leave a giant sticky mess! The other day I really wanted something sweet, something gooey, and something that wasn’t going to ruin my diet. So I created a yummy treat with simple ingredients that satisfied my sweet tooth!

Ingredients

1 medium banana, sliced
1 tsp cinnamon
1-2 tsp honey/agave
1 TBSP PB2 (powdered peanut butter)

Instructions

Heat a non-stick pan on low-medium heat
and spray with non-stick cooking spray. Mix
the tablespoon of PB2 and set aside. Place
sliced bananas in pan and cook 2-3 minutes
per side until caramelized. Place on plate, sprinkle
with cinnamon. Divide peanut butter evenly on banana

slices and drizzle with honey.

Scale.. Me not

Happy Beautiful Friday Folks! The sun is shining and it is the best day of the week! I hope yall have something fun planned for the weekend, the weather is supposed to hold up for us so why not get outside and try something new?

I want to address the scale… You know that thing that sits in your bathroom and stares at you, calling your name to just take one step up on it? That thing that some may fear, some may despise and some may not even use. Yea that thing! Listen to me very carefully… Do NOT let that THING define YOU. Have you ever found yourself stuck at a certain number and no matter how hard you try, it doesn’t budge? That number is not who YOU are. That number does not tell the true story about the amazing person behind it.

Many use the scale in order to track their weight loss progress. Some may get extremely frustrated when it doesn’t move in the direction they hoped. You know what? Progress is not solely measured by what number the scale exhibits. Progress is in the eye of the beholder. Progress is defined in soo many different ways; you just have to know where to look.

When someone tells me that their weight hasn’t gone done or maybe it has even gone up, I reassure them not to worry about it. If you are following your lifestyle plan ie eating right and exercising, that is progress in itself! If you have more energy throughout the day because you are eating balanced meals every day, that’s progress! If your clothes fit better and you are wearing items that you used to not be able to, progress!

What about this… If you find that you are overeating less or you are eating more vegetables, progress! Maybe your body weight has remained the same but your body fat percentage has reduced, that’s progress!! Maybe you find that you are more positive, more determined and more focused than before, yep that’s the progress I am talking about!

Please do not get stuck on what that number on the scale says. Do not let it put limits on who you are and where you are going! If you are going to weigh yourself, aim to do it first thing in the morning after things are..eh..moving. Try to stay consistent, so if you weigh yourself with only socks on, do that every time. Also, do not weigh yourself every day! If you must weigh in, do it once a week and move on. Life is too great to be held back by a number on the scale.

Take care of you!

Supplements, Part One

A very common question I get asked is what to take pre/post work out in regards to supplements. There are thousands of products out there that promise to do this or enhance that but for the purpose of this post, I am going to include the basics that I take daily (or almost daily) that I personally incorporate to help me achieve my goals and provide stamina through my workouts.

Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs)- Branch Chain Amino Acids or as commonly referred to BCAAs, are amino acids that have an aliphatic side-chain with a branch. The BCAAs are Valine, Leucine, and isoleucine and are part of the nine essential amino acids intake through diet. When taken during training, BCAAs have been shown to prevent loss of lean body mass (muscle breakdown or catabolism), increase energy, enhance protein synthesis and aid in recovery. I use the pill and powder form throughout the day. I use the pill form pre-cardio especially if it happens to be fasted to prevent muscle breakdown and in between meals when dieting. The powdered form is fantastic to throw in your water for pre-, during and post-workout.

Glutamine- This has been my lifesaver multiple times! You know when you are so sore from working out you can barely walk up the stairs of put your hair in a ponytail? Yea me neither! Just kidding, that is every dang week! Glutamine is also an amino acid that is the most abundant free amino acid in skeletal muscle and human blood. Glutamine is very important for protein synthesis, cellular energy, gut and intestinal health, and prevention of muscle catabolism. I take this in the pill and powder form throughout the day especially post-workout because it has been shown to re-synthesize glycogen levels in muscle. Just like the BCAA powder, the powdered Glutamine is great to throw in your water or protein shake.

Fish Oil- Fish oil is very high in Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), which are essential fatty acids that we must ingest through our diet because they are not synthesized in our bodies. Omega-3 fatty acids play important roles cognitive functioning, heart health, vision and joint health. Fish oil also helps tremendously with exercise-related inflammatory and oxidation by reducing the inflammation and aiding with recovery. Fish oil, especially EPA and DHA, have been suggested to aid in protein synthesis and possibly limit muscle breakdown. I typically take fish oil pills with breakfast and dinner, but it is more of a personal preference when to take it.

Arginine- Surprise! Arginine is a non-essential amino acid that the body normally produces. Arginine is found in animal products such as dairy, beef, poultry, and seafood and in plant sources such as chickpeas, oatmeal, nuts, seeds and wheat flour. Arginine plays a role in wound healing, immune function, and release of hormones and is a pre-curser for nitric oxide synthesis. When working out, arginine is beneficial in muscle tissue repair, muscle growth, and since it is a precursor to nitric oxide (a vasodilator), it increases blood flow to the working muscles thus increasing muscular endurance (think more oxygen delivered to your muscles). I typically take Arginine in pill form about 30 minutes prior to weight training.

As I mentioned, there are soo many different pre- and post-workout supplements on the market. I encourage you to do your research or ask about products before spending a fortune on things you may not need.

A while back, I found a recipe for protein bars and decided to make some changes to come up with chocolate-vanilla swirl bars.

Ingredients

3 Scoops Chocolate Protein
½ cup Brown rice flour
½ tsp baking powder
1 medium banana
½ cup water
2/3 cups liquid egg whites
1 scoop Vanilla protein
¼ cup liquid egg whites

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350. Mix chocolate protein, brown rice flour,
and baking powder in a medium sized bowl. Using a mixer, blend
banana, water and 2/3 cups egg whites until well blended. Slowly add
wet ingredients into dry until well mixed. Spray baking dish (I used an 8x8
glass pan) with non-stick spray and pour batter in until evenly distributed.
In a bowl, mix vanilla protein and ¼ cup egg whites. Slowly pour vanilla
mixture on top of chocolate in straight lines. Drag knife through vanilla to
create swirl design. Bake for 20-25 minutes.

June AB Challenge

It is already Wednesday <insert happy dance here> The week is flying by and so is this month! Yesterday's challenge was all about YOU but for the month of June, I am launching the AB Challenge and would love for all of you to join me! I previously discussed the importance of a strong core (including abdominal muscles)  HERE including a quick training session for those muscles. This challenge can be performed at home, on the road, at the gym, in your backyard, with your friends or even your kiddos! Summer is just around the corner so lets have some fun and start shaping up our midsections together!

Comment below to take the pledge for June! Lets do this together!!

I have had some requests for healthy dessert ideas. That sweet tooth can really get the best of me sometimes but instead of indulging in a bunch of crap that will make me feel not soo good the next day, I have a couple "go-to's" that satisfy the craving and leave me feeling on track with my goals.

Take care of you!
